The Heritage Trail is an attractive multi-use trail system for walking, jogging, hiking and biking that overlooks the Ohio River and connects downtown Madison with the hilltop section of town.

The Heritage Trail begins at the west end of downtown where Vaughn Drive and Vernon Street meet near the banks of the Ohio River and follows the path of the former Madison and Indianapolis Railroad, which was approved for construction in 1836 and finished in 1845.

The Heritage Trail rises 113 feet per mile and has an average grade of 5.89 percent, which is the steepest grade on a local railroad in the U.S.

There is no charge to use the Heritage Trail and the trail is open year round.

Motorized vehicles not allowed.
